The Master Plan

What was Jesus’ process for making disciple-makers? Robert Coleman famously laid out a simple step by step process for how Jesus made disciples in his book The Master Plan of Evangelism. He submitted 8 processes that Jesus meticulously modeled to his original disciples that people today can copy.

  1. Selection – Jesus chose to invest in ordinary people
  2. Association – Jesus focused on being with his disciples in all aspect of life and ministry
  3. Consecration – Jesus required obedience from those who followed him
  4. Impartation – Jesus gave himself away for the sake of his disciples
  5. Demonstration – Jesus modeled for his disciples how to live for the Kingdom of God
  6. Delegation – Jesus delegated tasks to his disciples
  7. Supervision – Jesus always took the time to follow up and supervise the tasks he delegated to his disciples
  8. Reproduction – Jesus expected his disciples to reproduce

This is not a bulletproof process by any means and nowhere in Scripture does Jesus say this is a program that always has to be in a sequential order. Coleman merely highlights these 8 steps are what Jesus did and we should go and do likewise. He is the Master. But people are people…they are forgetful, messy, and stubborn. That is why Dr. George G. Robinson in his book, Generational Disciple-Making, states “a disciple-maker must be hyper-observant and a good listener.” We must listen to the Holy Spirit and the people around us to effectively make generations of disciple-makers. We are called by Jesus to go make followers of Him.

That is the Master Plan and the Master’s Plan.
